Acne – The Most Common Skin Problem

Acne is one of the most common and troublesome skin-care problems for people around the world. Acne which is the common name Acne vulgaris, it is a widespread human skin disease among the teenagers. Although it is not a dangerous disease but if left untreated it can disfigure the face of an individual to quite an extent. It mainly affects skin which has the large population of sebaceous follicles; these areas include the upper part of the chest, the face and the back. Rigorous acne is inflammatory, but they sometimes it can appear in non inflammatory forms as well.

Both women and men can suffer from acne. While it is prominently seen on youngsters and teenagers, it may possibly still affect people at any age. Apart from scarring, its major effects are psychological, such as reduced self-estem and in very severe cases, depression or sometimes suicide. For the majority of people, acne reduces over time and have a propensity to disappear or at the very least decreases by age 25.

This hormone mainly rises during adolescence. Acne actually develops as a result of blockages in the follicles. These blockages are formed because of the accumulation of the sebum and dead cells. Under this condition, the naturally occurring largely commensal bacterium Propionibacterium which lives on our skin, cause inflammation, leading to inflammatory lesions in the dermis which results in redness and may result in scarring or hyper pigmentation.

Among the other probable causes of acne is diet as it is always possible that the type of food you eat, might as well contribute to the acne formation. Sometimes stress becomes the cause of the acne as stress causes discharge of extra acne causing hormones secreted from the adrenal glands.  In fact sometimes the healing power of the immune system also decreases because of the stress. An important cause of acne as belief by many people is the use of cosmetics as habit of using excessive and cheap cosmetics can also chunk the pores of the skin resulting in the formation of the acne.

Symptoms of Acne

There are many symptoms of the acne like comedones or blackheads and whiteheads, papules or pinheads, nodules (large papules), pimples etc. But the major symptoms of acne are Scar and Pigmentation

Scars

Acne scars are the consequence of inflammation inside the dermis brought on by acne. The scar is actually created by the lesion trying to cure itself resulting in excess of collagen in one spot. The scar of acne is further divided into many different types like Ice pick scars- these are the most classic and common sign of acne scarring, Box car scars- this type of scars are generally angular and usually occur on the temple and cheeks, and can be either deep or superficial these are akin to chickenpox scars, Rolling scars- this type scars gives the skin a wave-like appearance, Hypertrophic scars- these are thickened scars

Pigmentation

In acne pigmented scars are typically the result of cystic or nodular acne. They are the painful ‘bumps’ which lie down under the skin. They are often followed by an inflamed red mark. However they can be avoided just by avoiding irritation of the nodule or cyst. Pigmentation scars almost always lighten with time taking between three months to two years.

Different Types of Acne

According to the dermatologist on the basis of severity and appearance, acne can be classified into three types namely Comedonal, Papular and Cystic. Comedones are blocked pores caused by surplus oil that mix with dead skin cells.  Basically, what we call blackheads and Whiteheads are just comedones, which have skin mounting over the opening. These comedones are generally caused by means of hair products and makeup that hold oil, or from excessive humidity sweating. Papules are the painful, inflamed pink or red bumps.

These are the pimples that every woman knows and hates. Papules are caused by blocked pores that acquire infection from the bacteria.  Hormones, Stress, and humidity also can increase the probability of this infection because they make the body secret more oil, which attracts bacteria.  The worst form of acne is Cystic. This type of acne is usually large, inflamed bumps in clusters around the face. They can also appear on the groin, buttocks, and armpit area. They have an effect on deeper skin tissue than what other common acne does. They easily leave scars, but with good treatment they can fade. In most of the cases the cause of it is found to be the genetic problem.

Don’t wash face with bar cleansers or soaps as the ingredients they hold often clog pores. Instead use a mild, water-soluble cleanser to clean the face. They help reduce oily skin and acne without making the skin dry. Never use excessive hot or cold to clean the face or to take care of a blemish.

Ice cubes or hot compresses are not the correct way to treat acne or to support healing. Instead they become the source of inflammation, and that make acne bad. Niacinamide and nicotinic acid which are the derivatives of vitamin B3 also helps in improving the appearance of acne as they have many anti-inflammatory properties

Seeing a dermatologist is best way to get the acne treated.  However for different types of acne different process of Acne Treatment can be done. Some of the treatments are done in the following ways

Nonprescription topical treatments: “Topical” Acne Treatment is the safest way to treat acne as in this way of treatment the products can be put on the skin. These products contain chemicals like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and sulfur. These treatments are available in many forms including lotions, gels, soaps, creams, and pads.  These products can be used on a regular basis. There application moderately effective in treating acne. It may take 5-8 weeks for skin to get better.

Prescription topical treatments: This is one way of Acne Treatment which includes antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene, and azelaic acid.

Prescription oral drug treatments: For the treatment of moderate to severe acne, doctors frequently prescribe oral antibiotics (pills) in along with topical medication. Oral antibiotics are helpful in controlling acne by restricting the growth of bacteria, thus decreases the inflammation. They are usually taken on a daily basis for months and then lessened and finally discontinued as the acne gets better. The most powerful oral drug is isotretinoin. It is assumed to lessen the size of the oil glands with the intention that much less oil will be produced resulting in the presentation of blocking of pores.
